Bright Young Scholars (BYS) Discovery — Rules & Parent/Guardian Regulations
BYS-DISC-RULES-R1-001 · Version R1.0 · Effective 2026-10-21
What is Discovery?
BYS Discovery is a Parent-supported way for a family to get to know BYS. It brings together a private My Learning Journey record, a learner's Books list, human-curated suggestions in the BYS Shelf, and relevant BYS communications. Discovery is currently offered without a subscription fee. You do not have to join Discovery to consider any future BYS Access or BYS Guided programme.
The current experience is designed for learners aged 7–17. BYS reviews each family's request and whether the experience is suitable; entering a date of birth does not by itself grant access.
Who manages the account?
An adult Parent or authorised Guardian creates and manages the account. You must be entitled to act for every child you link and provide accurate information. Before a linked learner profile is created or activated, you must affirmatively declare your Parent/Guardian or other lawful authority for that learner and accept the separate, versioned Parent/Guardian Consent & Child Data Notice. These choices are not assumed from account creation or email verification. Please tell BYS if your authority, contact details or the child's circumstances relevant to participation change. Email verification and setting a password secure your account; they do not activate Discovery. A separate request, required confirmations and BYS Admin approval are needed.
Children do not have their own Discovery login in this release. Please keep your password and one-time email links private, and sign out on a shared device. Do not send passwords or one-time links to BYS.
How do linked learners work?
The current pilot allows up to three linked learners under one Parent account. Discovery is approved for the Parent account, not separately for each child. During an active approved period, you can select an eligible linked child and see that child's own Journey, Books and Shelf selections. One sibling's private record must not be shown as another sibling's record.
You will be asked to confirm your relationship and lawful authority for each child when adding that profile, and to make the separate child-data acknowledgement before the profile is activated. If a child's details are wrong or a child is linked in error, contact BYS rather than creating a second profile for the same child.
When does access begin and end?
BYS Admin approves the actual start and end dates. A Discovery period may be up to 90 calendar days; a shorter approved period does not extend itself to 90 days. If an approved start date is in the future, protected Discovery features begin on that date. The approved dates shown in your account govern access.
There is no automatic renewal. If you wish to continue after a period ends, make a new request for BYS review. Earlier participation does not guarantee a new period. If BYS closes a period early, protected Discovery access ends, while the account and permitted historical records are handled under the Privacy Policy. An expired or closed period is not the same as immediate deletion of your account or a learner's history.
What is the TR reference?
After the first approved Discovery period, BYS issues a TR reference for the Parent's Discovery account. It helps BYS and your family identify the Discovery context. It is not a permanent Learner Code, a separate child membership or proof of admission to Access or Guided.
How does My Learning Journey work?
Select the learner whose Journey you want to view. The Parent may help capture the child's own words about experiences, reading and interests, and may add clearly identified Parent observations or suitable supporting material. Please distinguish what the child said from what an adult observed. Avoid unnecessary sensitive information, details about other people and material you do not have permission to share.
You can return to an in-progress private Journey during an active approved period. A final submission is sent for human BYS review; it is not automatically published. BYS may ask for clarification, then publish a reviewed version privately for the family or decide not to publish it. Earlier dated records and traceable corrections are handled according to the Privacy Policy. Journey is not a clinical assessment, formal evaluation, ranking or BYS Coin award.
What are Books and the BYS Shelf?
Books / Read & To Read is the selected learner's private reading list within My Learning Journey. You can record a book as To Read or Read, with optional details. The list continues across approved Discovery periods; it is not copied into a new list each time. It does not automatically become a Shelf selection or an evaluation result.
BYS Shelf has two views. Explore the BYS Shelf shows the published resource catalogue. Chosen for [Learner] shows items BYS has selected for that particular learner; a sibling can have different selections. BYS chooses these items through human curation. A book, kit or game shown on Shelf is a suggestion, not a required purchase or a BYS shop order. Parents decide whether a resource suits their child and circumstances.
How will BYS communicate?
BYS may send essential account and Discovery messages, including verification, security and decision messages, to the account email. Please keep that inbox accessible and tell BYS if a delivery or verification step fails. The portal's Live Update area may carry general information; it does not itself approve a learner, extend a period or change a private record. A particular response time or event schedule is not promised by this guide.
For general service questions, contact info@by-s.org or +91 94953 38900. Start with a brief description; please do not email a password, one-time link, learner document or payment detail as your first message. BYS will explain the appropriate next step.
How should we use the portal?
Use your own account, respect other families' privacy and share only material you have authority to provide. Do not try to view another family's records, copy restricted BYS material, interfere with the site or upload harmful or unlawful content. Help your child use any suggested offline activity safely and appropriately. BYS Discovery is not an emergency, medical, mental-health or diagnostic service.
Can a learner or account be closed?
Contact info@by-s.org to ask about closing a linked learner's participation or the Parent account. BYS will check that the request comes from someone authorised, identify which learner is concerned, and explain any review or legal-record steps. Closing one learner's participation should not remove an active sibling's separate records. A Discovery period ending or being closed does not by itself complete an account or data-deletion request.
BYS retains personal information only while reasonably needed for the relevant programme, operational, security and legal purposes. Information no longer required may be deleted or irreversibly anonymised; backup copies expire through controlled retention cycles. The approved Privacy Policy and BYS's internal retention schedule govern the details. This guide makes no fixed-number deletion or backup promise.
What is outside Discovery?
Discovery does not include a paid subscription, payment, Access or Guided enrolment, independent learner login, BYS Coins, Challenger submissions, Clinic, formal or automated evaluation, mentoring/pathway operations or other future learning operations. BYS Access and BYS Guided may be described separately as Coming Soon; Discovery does not automatically turn into either of them. BYS Journals may be described as a future reading gateway, but no Journals link is active until BYS approves its destination.
